Understanding your golf swing with the FlightScope Mevo+ Pro Package

I recently purchased the optional Pro Package add-on to go with my FlightScope Mevo+ 2023 edition, which provides 11 additional data parameters centering mainly around club data, including the full D-Plane data set. 

In the simplest sense, the Pro Package allows you to understand exactly how your club is moving through the impact zone, as well as what your clubface looks like at impact. So in terms of being able to dissect exactly what happened with every shot and swing you make – it’s as good as it gets.

All the tools at your disposal

There’s no question that I play my best golf when I’m hitting draws. Admittedly, the ball doesn’t always draw back, and sometimes I am prone to hitting a hook or two – but when I’m on the golf course I will exclusively try to hit draws.

As far as I understand, in order to hit a draw as a right-handed player you need to have a club path that is out to the right, while your club face should be slightly open to the target and slightly closed to your club path at impact.

In principle it sounds relatively simple, but considering the entire golf swing is over in one or two seconds – the only way to really know what is happening with your club at impact is by looking at the data.


For example, take a look at my shot below:

The Pro Package includes 11 additional data parameters, including; face to path, face to target, dynamic loft, club path, vertical swing plane, horizontal swing plane, low point, vertical descent angle, curve, club speed profile and club acceleration profile.

I would describe this shot as a perfect baby draw. My club path was out to the right, my club face was open to the target (FTT), and it was slightly closed in relation to my swing path (FTP) – thus ensuring the ball started out to the right and drew back.

However, golf is a game of fine margins. And while I would like to hit the shot above every time I pull out my driver – it’s realistically not going to happen. 

Take the shot below as an example, which I hit during the same range session:

In contrast to my typical draw, this shot was a flare out to the right. And if I compare this data with the previous shot, it becomes clear that there are two possible reasons for why this happened:

Firstly, rather than the club traveling to the right in the downswing, my club path was 0.2 degrees to the left, and although this is very neutral – it will mainly produce a straight shot or a cut depending on the club face. 

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly; although my club face was open to the target – which is correct for a draw – it was 1.6 degrees open to my club path on impact, which explains why the ball started right but didn’t draw back.

It’s important to note that I felt like I made a similar swing for this shot compared to the previous shot, but it was only once I analyzed the data that it became clear why the ball ended up where it did. 

The reality is that there’s often a big difference between feel and real, and when you’re swinging at 100mph+ it can be incredibly difficult to figure out exactly what went wrong. And in a sport where a few degrees could be the difference between your ball landing in the middle of the fairway or in a water hazard – accuracy matters. 

Ultimately, although swing videos are helpful, I have found the only way to truly understand what is happening in your golf swing is by analyzing the data. That way, you will be able to figure out exactly what you’re doing right, and where you can improve – and thanks to the FlightScope Mevo+ and Pro Package combination, I can do exactly that.
